Book Reviews and Review Articles
EMLC regularly publishes both traditional book reviews and review essays in English. In a review essay, a series of recent publications on a focused theme are discussed and compared (see for example Judith Pollmann’s review essay and Der Weduwen’s). Both formats aim to stimulate scholarly debate.
Our book review editor, Nina Lamal, contacts scholars who might serve as reviewers. We also welcome submissions from our readership. We actively encourage PhD students and early career researchers to review publications in their field.
If you would like to propose a publication for review or a topic for a review essay (including the titles of the publications that will be reviewed), please reach out to our review editor (emlc.bookreviews@proton.me).
Eligibility of the reviewed work(s)
Please keep in mind that the publication should focus on a topic relevant to the scope of our journal. It should be published within the last three years, and the publication can be in any language. As a rule, the publication should be written for an academic audience and contribute to the current scholarly debate. Exhibition catalogues are only eligible if they contain substantial scholarly essays.
Submission procedure
Book reviews should be submitted to the review editor within four months after the book has been received. Review essays are due within six months after delivery of the publications to the reviewers (though exceptions can be made for essays reviewing many publications). Your review will be proofread and copy-edited.
Guidelines
All reviews are written in English and should follow the EMLC stylesheet.
Book Reviews are concise evaluations of a single recent title (1,000-1,200 words). They preferably do not include footnotes (inclusion is only allowed in exceptional cases).
Review Essays discuss three to five publications on a single topic (max. 5,000 words) and footnotes are allowed.
